JUNIOR SCHOOL
FOUNDATION PHASE EDUCATION
The Foundation Phase consists of Grades R, 1, 2 and 3. At SJMC Junior School we offer both Mainstream and Montessori education in this section of the school.

Although the weekly routine differs in Mainstream and Montessori, all children participate in:

  • Religious Education
  • Physical Education which includes swimming
  • Computers
  • Library
  • Art
  • Class music
  • Literacy – English as a home language, Afrikaans as first additional language and conversational Xhosa.
  • Numeracy
  • Life Skills

Both Mainstream and Montessori classes use the benchmarks of the Western Cape Education Department to ensure quality and continuity between schools.

INTERMEDIATE PHASE EDUCATION
The Intermediate Phase consists of Grades 4, 5 and 6. At SJMC Junior School we offer both Mainstream and Montessori education in this section of the school.

A typical week in the Intermediate Phase can include:

  • Religious Education
  • Computer lessons
  • Languages – English as home language, Afrikaans as first additional language and conversational Xhosa.
  • Mathematics
  • Natural Sciences
  • Social Sciences
  • Life Orientation which includes Physical Education
  • Arts and Culture which includes class music, dance, art and drama
  • Technology which includes computer lessons

The Learner Representatives Council (LRC) meets twice a term to raise and discuss issues of concern to the Junior School learners.

An Intermediate Phase Market Day is held once a year. This gives the young entrepreneurs the opportunity to prove how creative they can be. Although they also discover that it is not that easy to make a profit on their goods, it is nonetheless a good experience for them.

EDUCATION SUPPORT
An Education Support Teacher, a Social Worker and an Occupational Therapist are available on the campus.

An Education Support Team (EST) assists teachers who have children in their classes that are experiencing difficulties with their school work.

Our Grade 7 pupils enjoy all the above benefits while following the subjects of the Senior Phase as listed below.

SENIOR SCHOOL
The Senior School strives for academic excellence while ensuring that all pupils deliver the highest standard they can achieve.

In aiming to achieve this, weekly academic testing, with all pupils, is done throughout the year, while Academic Support classes are offered in the afternoons.

The school’s Mentor Programme has ensured closer contact with all pupils in a small group environment and therefore the ability to track those who are struggling academically.

The following subjects are available to the Senior School pupils:

Grades 8 - 9

  • Economic Management Science
  • Technology
  • Arts & Culture (Art, Drama, Music)

  • Life Orientation
  • Physical Science* or History (*must also study Mathematics)
  • Accounting* or Geography or Music (*must also study Mathematics)
  • Business Studies or Life Science or Visual Art
  • Religion
